Increasing Java memory

Heavy users of live data commands may experience slowness due to the web browser Java Plug-in running out of memory. The default memory limit for the Java Plug-in is usually around 60-90MB. We recommend increasing the memory limit for the Java plug-in if your system allows.

Before you can increase the Java memory limit, you must find out which version of Sun Java you have installed on your PC. Different versions of Sun Java support different Java Runtime Parameter increases. The amount of memory which can be increased depends on the version of the browser, Sun Java and in some cases toolbar add-ons. This topic contains procedures for checking your Sun Java version and configuring a memory limit increase.

To configure the Sun Java environment

  1. Open Control Panel by doing one of the following:

  1. Double-click the Java icon. This may be located under Other Control Panel Options.

  2. Activate the Java tab.

  3. In the Java Applet Runtime Settings section, click View. The Java Runtime Settings dialog box opens. The Version column displays version details.

  4. Double-click the Java Runtime Parameter field for the most recent Version in the list. An edit box displays.

  5. Add the following case sensitive text string that corresponds with the version of Sun Java you are running:

Sun Java version 1.6 update 10 or above:

This is the preferred Sun Java version as it allows a larger amount of Java memory increase. Download this version of Java http://java.com/en/. You should be able to increase the Java memory to a value that is half of the system RAM. For example, if there is 1Gb of RAM available, you can configure Java memory to either 500Mb (-Xmx500m) or less.

View your system RAM

    1. Open Windows Explorer.

    2. Right-click on My Computer, then select Properties from the pop-up menu. The System Properties dialog box opens. The General tab displays RAM information.

Note: Clients using a Firefox browser need Firefox 3 or higher for this version of Sun Java.

Sun Java version 1.5 update 6 to 1.6 update 7:

Using -Xmx128m makes 128MB of memory available for the Java Plug-in. You can also try a higher figure of 192MB, 256MB, or 512MB if your system allows. To use these values, replace the Java Runtime Parameter field contents with either -Xmx192m, -Xmx256m or -Xmx512m.

  1. Click OK.

  2. Restart the PC for the Java memory changes to take effect.

Note: If re-logging in to the browser triggers errors such as "The Java Runtime Environment cannot be loaded" or "Application Error. The memory could not be read", repeat this procedure and re-configure the memory limit to a lower value.
